Amendment to the Parliamentary Elections Act No.1 of 1981 - According to section 8(8) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No.1 of 1981, the Election Commission has published a Code of Conduct relating to the conduct of political parties, independent groups and candidates contesting the election, thorough the Gazette Extraordinary Notification No.2178/25 dated 2020‑06‑03. It has been identified that it would be appropriate to amend the Parliamentary Elections Act, No.1 of 1981 in order to include actions to be taken in the event of violating this Code of Conduct and to include provisions stating that those will be effective during his/her tenure in the office and enable to provide the opportunity to identified persons holding special positions to vote at a special polling station apart from the polling station allocated for them. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Hon. President to instruct the Legal Draftsman to prepare a draft Bill to amend the said Act by incorporating provisions thereto, was approved by the Cabinet. |
