National Policy on Volunteerism in Sri Lanka
- Volunteerism plays a tremendous role in promoting socio economic development activities in the sectors of eradication of poverty, child care, empowerment of women, rehabilitation of drug addicts, community health activities, supporting the persons with disabilities and elders, providing relief in disaster situations and environmental management. As such, it has become a dire necessity to introduce a National Policy on Volunteerism in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment, for the proposed National Policy on Volunteerism drafted in consultation with the civil society, academia, professionals, the general public and the relevant Governmental and non governmental institutions and private sector institutions and to draft appropriate legislation in that regard, was approved by the Cabinet in principle.
