Amending the Existing Medical Ordinance No.26 of 1927
- The Medical Ordinance lays down provisions to protect, the health of the public, to enhance the public confidence in the health sector professionals and to promote the professional standards of the health sector professionals. The Medical Ordinance which had been enacted in 1927 has been subject to several amendments and a proposal had been made to amend the Medical Ordinance No.26 of 1927 to suit the present trends to amend the functions and the responsibilities of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and the Ceylon Medical College Council and also to maintain the disciplinary procedure of the medical professionals at a high level. In this respect, an Experts' Committee which comprises of expertise in the relevant field having identified the components which should be amended had submitted a concept paper in that regard. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne, the Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine to establish a Task Force to submit the required recommendations pertaining to the amendments of the Ordinance and to refer the recommendations of the Task Force to the Legal Draftsman to amend the said Bill, was approved by the Cabinet.
