Purchase of 02 Air Conditioned - Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Sets for the Northern Line Train Service
- The Northern Line Train Service commenced in the year 2013, utilizing the then existing locomotive and rolling stock fleet. Subsequently, the new intercity train between Mount Lavinia and Kankesanthurai had commenced with the Air conditioned Diesel Multiple Unit Sets formed with 50ft long coaches that were imported for the upcountry service. Considering the high demand for this train service and the attraction of the general public, the proposal made by Hon. Arjuna Ranatunga, the Minister of Transport & Civil Aviation, to procure 02 new S13 Diesel Multiple Unit Air conditioned Coaches from M/s RITES LTD to be used in the Northern Line, in addition to the previous agreement made for the procurement of a Diesel Multiple Unit Air conditioned Coach of 65ft in length and to deploy the Diesel Multiple Unit Air conditioned coach of 50ft in length used in the Northern Line for service in the upcountry line which has the high attraction and the increasing demand of tourists, was approved by the Cabinet.
