The thrift use of electricity to meet the existing power shortage
- Due to the prevailing drought condition, the generation of electricity to meet the demand for the power consumption of the Island, has become a challenge. Considering the possibility of saving a considerable amount of power through the thrift use of electricity, until such time that the generation of electricity returns to normal, the attention of the Government has been focused to make the public aware of the measures to be taken for the thrift consumption of electricity. As such, the proposal made by Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, the Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development to make use of electricity thriftily, during the forthcoming three months by switching off two electric lamps in all houses, reduction of electricity consumption by around 10% in the public institutions and the religious and commercial establishments, switching off the unnecessary street lamps and switching them off one hour prior to the switching off time in a normal day, was approved by the Cabinet.
