Approval for the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Protocol relevant to the Forced Labour Convention
- Sri Lanka has ratified the Forced Labour Convention No.29 of 1930 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the year 1950, and the Abolition of the Forced Labour Convention No.105 of 1957 in the year 2003. Considering the trends in regard to the use of forced labour for sexual exploitation, child labour, modern slavery and human trafficking, the Protocol No.29 has been adopted as an additional device to the Forced Labour Convention of 2014. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena, in accordance with the request of the Non‑Cabinet Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations, to ratify the Protocol No.29 of 2014 pertaining to the Forced Labour Convention of 1930 to be on par with the provisions provided therein, for the existing legal framework in Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
