Redevelopment of the Wekanda Area of Slave Island

- It has been proposed to implement a redevelopment programme named 'Nawampuraya' in an extent of around 47 acres (19.4 hectares) in the Wekanda area of Slave Island. Since approximately, about 1200 small housing units are situated in the proposed area, it has been found that certain difficulties are bound to arise when implementing development activities pertaining to them. As such, in a manner so as to derive benefits for the land owners of the said area out of a participatory methodology adopted the proposal made by Hon. Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs, to seek Cabinet approval in principle, to implement the 'Nawampura Project' to redevelop the inner city area of the Slave Island, was approved by the Cabinet.
