Construction of Rural Bridges

- It has been planned to construct 4,000 bridges in the rural areas with the objective of extending the benefits of the national development to the remote areas of the Island as well through the improvement of transportation connectivity by connecting various areas of the Island. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Wajira Abeywardena, the Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government, to award the contract for the construction of 175 bridges of various sizes, so as to cover the 9 Provinces of the Island to Cleveland Bridge UK Limited in the United Kingdom, for a sum of 37.7 million Sterling Pounds, as recommended by the Cabinet Appointed Negotiation Committee, was approved by the Cabinet.
