Kalu Ganga Development Project for the prevention of flood and restraining Salinity intrusion and for the Supply of Drinking Water to the Hambantota District by diverting Kalu Ganga
- A feasibility study has been carried out to implement the Kalu Ganga development project at an investment of Rs 123 billion, with the main objective of preventing the damages caused in the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts due to the overflowing of the Kalu Ganga during the rainy season, restraining salinity intrusion in the supply of drinking water caused by the flowing of salinity up to 18 km upstream from the river mouth and providing drinking water to the Hambantota district, by diverting Kuda Ganga, which is a tributary of the Kalu Ganga. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. P. Harison, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development to call for proposals for Expression of Interest from the International Construction Companies which can implement the project with foreign investment, to call for project proposals from eligible construction companies and to appoint Cabinet Appointed Committees to evaluate them, was approved by the Cabinet.
