Introduction of Law as a subject under the Sub-Unit of Citizenship Education

- The necessity to provide the knowledge of Law to school children required to cater to the needs of daily life has been identified in order to create a law abiding future generation equipped with a higher standard of discipline. Accordingly, attention has been drawn to incorporate the basic laws that citizens should be familiar with such as traffic laws, child protection laws, laws relating to fundamental rights, environmental and public property laws, basic penal laws, human trafficking laws, minor sexual abuse laws, flora and fauna conservation laws, in the school curriculum from Grade 6 up to GCE (O/L) in the subject of Citizenship Education. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon.(Mrs.) Thalatha Atukorala, Minister of Justice & Prison Reforms to appoint a committee comprising of the experts in the fields of education, judiciary and law to study the proposal and report on same, was approved by the Cabinet.
