National Policy for the Senior Citizens of Sri Lanka

- Out of the total population of Sri Lanka 12.4% or 2.6 million people are in the age category of senior citizens over 60 years and by the year 2020, it is anticipated that the population will increase to about 16.3%. The government has adopted various measures for the welfare and the protection of the elderly population. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Daya Gamage, the Minister of Social Welfare and Primary Industries, to implement the National Policy prepared for the livelihood development and the protection of the rights of the elderly people in collaboration with the relevant institutions to develop the situation further, was approved by the Cabinet.
