Appointing a Special Commission to review the Salaries of the Public Sector

- It has been found that, it is a timely need to take measures to settle the problems pertaining to the salaries of the entire public sector after having studied the existing salary structures, and taking into consideration the dire difficulties to be faced by the general public and the adverse effects caused to the economy due to various groups in the public sector resorting to trade union action from the recent times to enhance their salaries and payments. In order to find immediate solutions, to avert this situation, the Government has focused its attention to appoint a Special Commission comprising of experts with the knowledge and experience in each sector in the Public Service. In this context, the rectification of salary anomalies in the Railways has been identified as a subject matter of the Commission. Accordingly, the Cabinet agreed on the proposal made by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Finance and Mass Media, to request H.E. the President to appoint a Special Commission to review the salary structures in addition to the functions of the National Salaries and Cadres Commission.
