Improvement of the quality of the Higher Education Institutions

- The 05 Universities established by Parliamentary Acts under various Ministries are functioning in order to provide the Sri Lankan students with higher educational opportunities in addition to the 15 universities regulated by the University Grants Commission. Due to limited facilities prevalent in the Government Higher Educational Institutions, 16 universities in all, with foreign universities which award degrees in collaboration with the said Higher Educational Institutions and the universities including those which have been granted approval to award their degrees are also functioning in Sri Lanka. As such, the proposal made by Hon. (Dr.) Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the Minister of Higher Education & Cultural Affairs, to draft the necessary legislation to establish the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Commission with a view to ensuring the quality and consistency in the Higher Education Sector by assuring the accreditation and quality in all these Educational Institutions, was approved by the Cabinet.
