Importation of Additional Maize Quantity required for the Production of Animal Feed

- It has been forecasted that approximately 500,000 metric tons of maize would be required for the production of animal feed in the year 2018. However, it has been estimated that, the maize production for the Maha Season of 2018 would be around 150,000 MT while the Yala Season production would be around 30,000 MT. As such, the joint proposal made by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture, and Hon. Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa, the Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development and Rural Economic Affairs, to import a 50,000 MT of maize by the National Food Promotion Board to be utilized for the production of animal food and to impose a trade tax of Rs 10/- per 1 kg of maize, was approved by the Cabinet.
