Programme for the construction of new houses for the displaced families in the Welioya Area

- The approval of the Cabinet has been granted previously to implement a special project to address the housing problem of 1,000 displaced families who lived in the villages of Helambawewa, Mayawewa, Sapumaltenna, Gajabapura, Hansawila and Namalpura in the Welioya Divisional Secretary's Division. Under this programme, construction work of 1,084 houses was initiated and out of them 994 housing units have now been completed. The construction work of the balance 90 houses is being completed. Another 256 families who lived in the area and left due to the conflict situation, having returned to the area, are living in temporarily built houses with in adequate facilities. Having also considered the request made by such families to assist in the construction of houses for them also under the said housing project. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Sajith Premadasa, the Minister of Housing and Construction, to construct houses for them as well under the said project, was approved in principle by the Cabinet.
