Amendment to the National Environmental Act
- The National Environmental Act, No.47 of 1980 provides the legal framework for the coordination of all sectors related to the environment of Sri Lanka, at national level and the Central Environmental Authority has been established as the fundamental institution for implementing the functions pertaining to the Act. Even though, this Act has been amended in several instances to suit the timely needs, the necessity for amending the Act has been recognized in order to find solutions for the present environmental issues as well as those that may arise in future.

Accordingly, in order to face current and future issues successfully, especially with regard to water pollution caused by factories, urban waste related issues and issues caused by illegal constructions, the proposal made by H.E. the President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft necessary legislation to amend the National Environmental Act, No.47 of 1980, was approved by the Cabinet.
