Preparation of a Master Plan for the Hambantota District

- It has been planned to set up a Special Economic Zone in Hambantota, in collaboration with the Government of China and for this purpose, China Harbour Engineering Corporation has been nominated by the Government of China. Under this, the construction of Sri Lanka - China Logistics and the Industrial Zone in Monaragala and Hambantota Districts are scheduled to be carried out under 03 stages. It has been decided that it would be appropriate to prepare a Master Plan for the Hambantota District, in order to ensure that a well planned urban development is carried out in the area concurrent to the development activities. As such, the proposal made by Hon. Sagala Ratnayake, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Project Management and Southern Development, to establish a consultancy service institute for the purpose and to set up a Project Management Unit for the coordination of the said project and also to provide the required facilities for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
