Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2018-05-30

Hosting of the 18th International Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora - (CITES)

Approval of the Cabinet has been granted to host the 18th International Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) from 22nd May to 03rd June 2019 in Sri Lanka. Even though, the responsibility of organizing this conference was vested with the then Ministry of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, it has since been entrusted to the Ministry of Buddhasasana by the Gazette Notification No.2064/26 dated 2018‑03‑28.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, the Minister of Buddhasasana, to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on hosting of the conference in Sri Lanka, to be entered into with the CITES Secretariat, on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
