Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2018-05-15
Revision of the name of the National Institute of Social Development as the 'Sri Lanka School of Social Work'
- The National Institute of Social Development is the only State Institute in Sri Lanka which provides education pertaining to social work. The institute which commenced in 1952 as the 'Institute of Social Work' has subsequently been named as the 'Sri Lanka School of Social Work'. Under Act No.41 of 1992 this institute has been established as a Higher Educational Institute by the name of National Institute of Social Development. Accordingly, the institute conducts higher educational courses pertaining to various subjects related to Social Work and also Counseling, Child Care, Elder Care, Community based Correction, Conflict Management, Leadership, Communication Skills and Project Management.

The proposal made by the experts who represent the Universities and most of those engaged in various professional fields pertaining to social work, is that when the programmes conducted by this institute is introduced to Government and Non-Governmental Institutes and also to the community at large, the name denoted by 'Sri Lanka School of Social Work' has a better professional recognition than the name of 'National Institute of Social Development'. Considering these facts, the Cabinet granted approval to change the name of 'National Institute of Social Development' and rename the institute as 'Sri Lanka School of Social Work'.
