Amendments proposed to the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No.9 of 2003
- The Consumer Affairs Authority has been established under the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No.9 of 2003. The main objective of this is to provide the consumers with the proper protection through the regulation of trade and the prices of goods and services and to protect traders and manufactures against unfair trade practices and the restrictive trade practices. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Rishad Bathiudeen, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, to amend the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, eliminating the short comings identified in the implementation of the Act for the last fifteen years commencing from 2003 and also while complying with the laws and regulations adopted in the developed and developing countries to protect the consumer and the trade competition in accordance with the new global marketing trends, was approved by the Cabinet.
