Re establishment of the Sri Lanka National Book Development Board
The Sri Lanka National Book Development Board, having established in the year 1972, on a recommendation made by the UNESCO to achieve the objectives of formulating and implementing a National Policy pertaining to the functions inclusive of improving and encouraging the habit of reading and referring books among public, writing and producing books, was abolished in the year 2012 and its functions were taken over by the National Library and Documentation Services Board. However, taking into consideration the necessity of having a separate entity to achieve the objectives and carry out the functions in a more effective manner, which were expected to be performed by the Sri Lanka National Book Development Board, the proposal made by Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the Minister of Education, to re establish the Sri Lanka National Book Development Board which was abolished in the year 2012, was approved by the Cabinet
