Securing of funds for the implementation of the Sri Lanka Emergency Solid Waste Management Project
- The Sri Lanka Emergency Solid Waste Management Project has been designed with a view to providing sustainable solutions to the problem with regard to the disposal of solid waste. This project also includes the construction of a waste disposal yard at Aluwkkaru area in Puttalam, for the disposal of waste generated within the Metro Colombo Region, expanding the existing composting facility at Muturajawela and the stabilization and development of the existing open dump sites not in use at present.

The total estimated cost of this project implemented by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development and the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government is US$ 274 million. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Prime Minister in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, to conduct loan negotiations with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of the World Bank in regard to obtaining a sum of US$ 115 million out of the cost estimate, was approved by the Cabinet.
