Amendment of Principal Ordinances and Acts related to the Local Authorities

- The necessity to amend the three principal Ordinances and Acts being the Municipal Councils Ordinance, Urban Councils Ordinance and the Pradeshiya Sabha Act relating to the Local Authorities to suit the timely requirements has been identified. As such, the Hon. Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, has appointed a Committee headed by a President's Counsel to propose the amendments necessary, considering the matters emphasized by the Local Authorities, Provincial Councils, Political Parties and the Civil Society Organizations from time to time and the recommendations of the Commission on Local Government Reforms published in the Parliament Session Report No.1 of 1999.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Faiszer Musthapha, the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, to instruct the Legal Draftsman to prepare legislation to amend the related legislation inclusive of the proposed amendments in order to ensure a more People Friendly Democratic Governance within the Local Authorities, was approved by the Cabinet.
