Mining and Pumping of Offshore Sand for Reclamation of land and Stockpiling at Muthurajawela and Kerawalapitiya areas

- Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation is engaged in purifying sea sand obtained from offshore sand mining and supplying such sand for construction activities as a solution to reduce the detrimental impacts of river sand mining caused on environment. For this purpose, it is necessary to secure fresh sea sand for stockpiling maintained at Muthurajawela area. Similarly, it is necessary to supply sea sand for the proposed land reclamation taking place at Kerawalapitiya in accordance with the development plans.

In this respect, international bids have been called for, to select a suitable contractor for mining and pumping offshore sand and accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to award the contract to M/s Rohde Nielsen A/S of Denmark for a sum of US$19.97 million as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC), was approved by the Cabinet.
