Establishment of an Export Processing Zone at Millaniya in the Kalutara District
- Rs.2.5 billion has been set apart by the budget 2018 to identify suitable lands to establish Export Processing zones along the expressway corridors and to provide facilities required for the purpose. It has become essential to establish new investment zones, since 12 Export Processing zones/ Industrial parks within the Western, Southern, Central and North Western Provinces under the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka are functioning at their maximum capacity at present.

A proposal has been made by a Thailand and Japanese Joint Venture to establish an industrial park in Sri Lanka, to enable to attract foreign investments and as such, several plots of suitable lands situated at Millaniya in the Kalutara District, have been identified for the purpose. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Malik Samarawickrema, the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, to vest the plots of lands identified to be suitable for establishing the proposed Export Processing Zone at Millaniya with the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka under two stages, was approved by the Cabinet.
