Motor Vehicle Fleet of the Government
A Comptroller General's Office has been established under the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media, with effect from 2017‑03‑07, with a view to monitoring the management of the assets and expenditure of the Government,. The main function of the Office is to maintain a list of central assets prepared covering all non‑financial assets of the Government. The statistics on the motor vehicle fleet of the Government received by the Office up to 2017-12-14 were submitted by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Finance and Mass Media and the Cabinet took note of the information.

A summary of the above statistics is given below:

Total number of motor vehicles belonging to the Government 57,961
Motor vehicles in running condition 50,238
   Central Government 26,732
   Public Enterprises 23,506
Motor vehicles not in running condition 7,723
   Central Government 5,922
   Public Enterprises 1,801


The Cabinet also decided to instruct the relevant officers to take necessary action to dispose of the motor vehicles not in running order expeditiously, which are not in use at present.
