Prescribing the Minimum Standards for the Medical Education
- Publishing of Minimum Standards on Medical Education under the Medical Ordinance, was a long felt need. The Sri Lanka Medical Council has drafted the Minimum Standards required for the Medical Education so as to cover the relevant sectors of medical education such as the minimum qualifications required for university entrance, content in the courses for medical education, assessment of medical students, academic staff, resources and facilities for education, course reviews, updating the syllabuses continuously and administration and management. All the relevant stakeholders including the Sri Lanka Medical Council, the University Grants Commission and the Attorney General have reached consensus with regard to the regulation of standards.

The Cabinet has decided to treat that the minimum qualification required for every student for entry into a University of Sri Lanka to follow Medical Education to be a minimum of two (02) Credit passes and an Ordinary pass obtained at the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, at one and the same sitting.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne, the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, to publish in the Government Gazette the Minimum Standards for Medical Education in Sri Lanka as Regulations under the Medical Ordinance, was approved by the Cabinet.
