Development of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya
- The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya which is more than 196 years old is comprised of 147 acres of land where more than 3,500 plant species are conserved. This internationally acclaimed botanical gardens has an annual turnout of approximately 1.6 million local and foreign tourists and it has been planned to further improve the available facilities, considering the objectives of the spectators in regard to education, research and recreation.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, to implement a project for the development of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya within the next period of 05 years and to secure funds amounting to Rs.385 million necessary for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
