Reduction of Landslide Vulnerability by the Disaster Mitigation Measures
- Due to intensive rains caused by climatic changes and as well as Landslides owing to the poor land use patterns resulting in slope instabilities have become a common occurrence in the mountainous region of the country. The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) and the other relevant Government Institutions have implemented a diverse number of programmes for the management of landslide risks. Measures for the mitigation of disaster risks should be taken, further, in order to arrest the threat of landslide as a whole, inclusive of the use of technical equipment required to detect the risks beforehand, embankment strengthening, surface water and ground water flows management, preparedness supported by training, awareness creation and construction of temporary evacuation centres.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, the Minister of Disaster Management, to mitigate the risk of landslides by adopting the measures for risks mitigation and to implement a project for the mitigation of disaster risks within the forthcoming four (04) years, was approved by the Cabinet.
