Empowerment of the economy through Mechatronics enabled Development Initiative (MEDI)
- Mechatronic Engineering has a promising place within the economy of the developed as well as the developing countries. Experiences in other countries have revealed that returns on investment in the Mechatronic Sector is more than 15 times of the other investments. With the development of this field in Sri Lanka benefits such as, enhancing higher technological exports, minimizing the expenditure on importation by creating high techno equipment which could be used in the production industry in Sri Lanka and generating high paying job opportunities for the well trained youth of Sri Lanka could be accrued.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, the Minister of Science, Technology and Research, to establish a Product Design Engineering and Manufacturing Park for the Companies dealing with Mechatronics within the premises of the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology in Pitipana, Homagama and to vest its managerial functions with the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERDC), was approved by the Cabinet.
