Further payment of house rental allowance to persons whose dwelling houses had been damaged completely or found unsuitable for occupation being subject to the floods and landslides which occurred in May 2017
- Due to the floods, landslides and storms that occurred in the latter part of last May, a large number of people were subject to distress and in respect of the families who were evacuated due to the complete loss of their dwelling houses or found unsuitable for occupation or landslide high risk areas, the Government decided to provide a housing rental allowance of Rs.7,500/- per month for each family for a period of three (03) months to enable them to reside in rented out houses temporarily. Accordingly, 3,584 families affected in the Districts of Ratnapura, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kalutara and Colombo were provided with the housing rental for the months of June, July and August, 2017.

The preliminary activities for the resettlement of such families are already underway and as such, the proposal made by Hon. Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, the Minister of Disaster Management, to extend the payment of the house rental now being paid for such families for a further period of three (03) months up until the completion of such activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
