Establishment of the Country Office of the International Fund (IFAD) for Agricultural Development

- The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a special agency of the United Nations dedicated to alleviate the rural poverty in the developing countries. The said agency which provided support for the implementation of the various projects in Sri Lanka since 1978 continue to provide the necessary support presently too, for the various agricultural development programmes. In order to strengthen its operational activities carried out in Sri Lanka, the fund intends to open a country office. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Thilak Marapana, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to sign an Agreement between the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the Government of Sri Lanka, for the establishment of its country office in Sri Lanka, was approved by the Cabinet.
