Establishment of Final Disposal Facility for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) at Aruwakkalu, Puttalam

- Due to the sudden collapse of the Meethotamulla landfill facility, the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste in the City of Colombo and suburbs has become a crisis. In this situation, the expeditious implementation of the sanitary landfill in the Puttalam Aruwakkalu area for which approval has already be granted, is essential.

Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to carry out the activities of the construction of the waste distribution centres relevant to the Solid Waste Management Project, the Sanitary Landfills and the connectivity railway tracks expeditiously and commence the waste disposal activities by the year 2020, was approved by the Cabinet.
