Preparation of a Mechanism to manage the declining Price of Pepper
- The Cabinet appointed a Cabinet Sub Committee under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Finance and Mass Media on 09-08-2017 to put forward suitable proposals with the objective of safeguarding the livelihood and the income of the persons engaged in pepper cultivation and who are affected as a result of the declining price of pepper in the international market and as well as in the local market.

Accordingly, as recommended by the Cabinet Sub-Committee, the proposal made by Hon. Daya Gamage, the Minister of Primary Industries, to maintain a certified price of Rs.900 per kg of dry pepper, to formulate a relief mechanism by the Government, taking into consideration the difference of the proposed certified price and the prevalent market price, to pay an amount subject to a maximum of Rs.150 per kg and to continue with the relief programme until such time that the market price of a kilogram of dry pepper exceeds Rs.900/-, was approved by the Cabinet.
