Promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Sri Lanka (STEM Education)
- It is absolutely important to have a labour force skilled in Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to make Sri Lanka a country with a high income receiving economy, through a knowledge based economy driven by innovation. There seems to be an international trend also for job markets in the fields of computer, mathematics, architecture, engineering, product design, robotics and other emerging technologies such as Nano‑Technology, biotechnology and the knowledge obtained through the STEM education would be beneficial in obtaining a highly paid job. Several developed countries in the globe are taking action to promote STEM education as a measure to improve the industrial sector in their countries.

Accordingly, taking into consideration a proposal made by Hon. Susil Premajayantha, the Minister of Science, Technology and Research, the Cabinet decided to appoint a Cabinet Sub‑Committee comprising of the Ministers of Education, Higher Education, Skills Development and Vocational Training, Science, Technology and Research, to design a strategic action plan in order to promote Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Sri Lanka and to introduce other similar fields which give rise to innovation to the education system.
