Revision of charges for the parcel transport by the Department of Railways

- The charges for the transport of parcels by the Department of Railways has not been subject to revision during the past 09 year period and the charges for same by the Department are quite low when compared with the charges made by other parties for the transport of parcels. As such, the proposal made by Hon. Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, to increase the present charges for the transport of parcels by 50%, other than the charges for the parcels for non‑commercial and consumption purposes, with the objective of enhancing the revenue earned by the Department of Railways by parcel transport, without causing an extra burden to the general public, was approved by the Cabinet.
