Preservation of the Kandyan Heritage - The preservation of the ancient historic places subject to destruction located in the Central and Uva Provinces which are the centres of the Kandyan Heritage, the rehabilitation of the small tanks, anicuts and irrigation systems, which had largely contributed to the upcountry economy and for the protection of folk art and Janakala techniques including traditional Kandyan dancing forms, the metal, lacquer and cane industry and the flax plant production, rush and reed handicrafts, is of vital importance. Accordingly, it has been proposed to implement various projects including the implementation of the project for developing the Traditional Kandyan Village, renovation of rural tank and irrigation canals, rehabilitation of ancient historic places and the promotion of art techniques, including the establishment of museums and cultural centres. Therefore, the proposal made by Hon. S.B. Dissanayake, the Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage, for the establishment of a Statuary Board by an Act of Parliament titled the 'Kandyan Heritage Protection Authority' was approved by the Cabinet. |
