Ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury

- By now, 128 countries including Sri Lanka have signed the Minamata Convention on Mercury to minimize the global harmful effects of its usage while 53 countries have ratified it. With the ratification of this Convention, Sri Lanka will be afforded with the opportunity of participating as a Party at the conference, making formal representations directly to the Secretariat to the Convention, and work in collaboration with other countries being sensitive to global environmental issues. Accordingly, the proposal made by H.E. the President, Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment for Sri Lanka to ratify the Minamata Convention, was approved by the Cabinet.
