Provision of Light Emitting Diode Lamps (LED Lamps) to the households with less electricity consumption under the National Programme of Demand Side Energy Management
- The Government has focused greater attention for energy management through the reduction of the demand for electricity consumption and it has been proposed to distribute LED bulbs among the consumers with less electricity consumption at a concessionary loan scheme, as a measure towards making energy efficiency popular among them. Accordingly, it has been proposed to remove the bulbs of high electricity consumption used by the households and to replace them with LED bulbs with less electricity consumption and to recover the cost from the customers in equal monthly installments within 24 months without any interest, along with the monthly electricity bills. As such, the proposal made by Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, to provide a household which uses between 1 to 30 units of electricity per month, with 02 LED bulbs, which uses between 30 to 60 units of electricity with 03 LED bulbs and which uses between 60 to 90 units with 04 LED bulbs, under this programme and to purchase 1 million LED bulbs required for the purpose, through international competitive bidding, was approved by the Cabinet.
