Construction of Pre-fabricated houses in the Northern and Eastern Provinces
- On the basis of the recommendation of Hon. (Dr.) Sarath Amunugama, the Minister of Special Assignments appointed to re-evaluate the project for the Pre-fabricated houses proposed to be implemented with the objective of providing houses for the war affected displaced families of the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management has recommended the construction of 6,000 houses in the first instance, at a cost of Rs.1.5 million. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. D.M. Swaminathan, the Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, to construct 6,000 Pre-fabricated houses and to provide the houses built for the purpose in accordance with the requests of the displaced families and on their concurrence, was approved by the Cabinet. It was also decided for the appointment of a high level Officials' Committee to make recommendations for the mode of construction of 59,000 houses proposed to be constructed with the use of bricks and cement for the war affected displaced families of the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
