Implementation of Flood Mitigation Projects in the Year 2017
- After the flood situation which arose due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the city of Colomboy in November 2010, the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation had made a number of attempts to implement flood mitigation projects within the Colombo City and the suburban areas. Accordingly, during the year 2016 a sum of Rs.3,500 million was set apart for flood mitigation projects. In the year 2017, the construction of pumping stations, conservation of wetlands, and studies pertaining to floods under an estimated cost of Rs.3,700 million are to be carried out and some of these project have already been commenced. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to proceed with the flood control projects being implemented presently, was approved by the Cabinet as a matter of principle.
