Establishment of a Sanitary Landfill for the Colombo Municipal Council for Waste Disposal

- The Government has appointed a Committee comprising of the Secretaries to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mahaweli Development and Environment and Megapolis and Western Development to take appropriate measures to design a Sanitary Landfill necessary for the disposal of waste collected in the Colombo City. Taking into consideration a proposal made by the Waste Management Research Unit of the University of Peradeniya to establish a Sanitary Landfill in a State owned land of 5 acres in extent at Uswetakeiyawa, in Muthurajawela area of the Divisional Secretary's Division, Wattala, a Sanitary Landfill to be designed for the management of about 400 MT of waste per day and accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Faiszer Musthapha, the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, to implement this project expeditiously utilizing the allocation set apart for the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government for the year 2017, was approved by the Cabinet.
