Development of the Matara Riverside Park

- Development project of the Matara Riverside Park is one of the priority projects under the Matara Urban Development Programme. Under this programme, a Library, Gymnasium, Waterfront Residential Development activities, Office and Institutional Development activities, National Celebration Centres, River Front Recreational activities with a Boat Yard Facility and a parking area for vehicles is due to be constructed. Under Phase I of this programme, development work relevant to the prevention of river bank erosion has already been commenced. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to implement the future activities of the project, to transfer the ownership of the lands already acquired for the purpose with the Urban Development Authority, and to handover the maintenance of the build up properties to the Matara Urban Council when the project is completed, was approved by the Cabinet.
