Provision of Accommodation facilities to Tourists in the vicinity of Railway Stations (Back Packing Tourist Accommodation)

- According to the new concept to be introduced as proposed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the Railway Department will derive an additional income, by renovating the discarded railway carriages and placing them at selected locations by leasing out the lands unused by the Railway Department to create accommodation facilities for tourists in the Railway Stations such as Colombo Yard, Mahaiyawa Sub Railway, Nanu Oya, Ambewela, Ella and Dodanduwa. Accordingly, the joint proposal made by Hon. Nimal Siripala De Silva, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation; and Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, the Minister of Finance to implement the proposed project in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, was approved by the Cabinet.
