Implementation of the Rural Infrastructure Facilities and the Livelihood Development Programme
- The Ministry of Rural Economy has been able to successfully complete 241 infrastructure facility development projects and 145 livelihood development projects, based on the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa, within the year 2016 under the Rural Infra-structure Facilities and the Livelihood Development Programme. As such, considering the level of poverty within the entire Island, it has been identified that it is appropriate to implement the above programme, in other districts as well. Under this programme it is expected to develop rural access roads, modernization of small irrigation work, drinking water projects, and development of common amenities like small bridges, culverts etc., implementation of self employment projects for youth, small and medium scale entrepreneurship projects, animal husbandry, fisheries and cultivation projects. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. P. Harison, the Minister of Rural Economy, to implement the Rural Infrastructure Facilities and the Livelihood Development Programme through the District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries and the relevant Government Institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Rural Economy, in the year 2017 in the districts of Mullativu, Galle, Moneragala, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Puttalam and Matale, in addition to the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa and to get the necessary provisions allocated for the purpose, was approved by the Cabinet.
