Establishment of the National Commission on Women
- The Sri Lanka Women's Bureau and the National Committee on Women although mandated to ensure the protection of the rights of women in Sri Lanka and empower them, these institutions do not possess the authority to engage actively to address incidences of violence and inquire into such incidences and initiate legal proceedings.

As such, the proposal made by Hon. (Mrs.) Chandrani Bandara, the Minister of Women and Child Affairs, in consideration of the Constitutional provisions and in terms of the convention, the responsibility vested with the Government in the elimination of all forms of violence against women and for the advancement of women, for the establishment of the National Commission on Women, was approved by the Cabinet.
