Press briefing of Cabinet Decision taken on 2017-02-21
Construction of Houses for the Plantation Community - Request to increase the allocation per house from Rs.650,000.00 to Rs.1,000,000.00
- As initiated by the Ministry of Hill country, New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development, new houses are being constructed for the plantation community by the Estate Workers Co-operative Societies through the Plantation Human Development trust on loan and grant basis. The estimate prepared is Rs.650,000/- in 2014, for a house, consisting of two bed rooms, a dining room, verandah, kitchen and an attached toilet. It is observed that, this amount is inadequate in view of the current prices of building materiel. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Palani Dhigambaran, the Minister of Hill Country, New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development to increase the estimated cost of a house from Rs.650,000/- to Rs.1,000,000/- for a complete house and of which Rs.480,000/- to be given as a grant and Rs.520,000/- as a loan to be paid in a period of 15 years and the full amount to be provided as a grant to the families affected by landslide and who have been asked to vacate their houses, was approved by the Cabinet.
