Implementation of the Bibile Sugar Development Project

- The implementation of a Sugar Development Project has been proposed with a view to enhancing the living standards of the people living in the Rambakan Oya Special Economic Zone of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority by providing them with cultivable lands to enable them to derive a better income. According to this Project Proposal which is a Public Private Partnership venture with a total foreign investment of US$152.25, it has been planned to produce 80,000 MT of sugar annually and generate around 1,000 direct and 75,000 indirect employment opportunities. Similarly, the production of by products like animal feed and organic fertilizer and the commencement of a sub-project producing about 20 MWs of power has been planned. The proposal which has been submitted for the implementation of this project inclusive of the Divisional Secretary's Divisions of Bibile and Medagama, was approved by the Cabinet.
