Implementation of Phase II of the Bandaranaike International Airport Development Project and construction of the ‘Remote Apron and Taxiways’
- The Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has handled 9.5 Million air passengers in the year 2016, and as per the passenger forecast, it is anticipated that it will have to handle around 14.5 Million air passengers by the year 2020. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, to award the contract for construction of the ‘Remote Apron and Taxiways’ with a view to increasing the BIA accommodation capacity to 15 Million air passengers per year and developing the infrastructure facilities of the Airport implemented under the Bandaranaike International Airport Development Project (BIADP) - Phase II with the loan grant provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as recommended by the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, was approved by the Cabinet.
