Regulations made under the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 52 of 1971 to regularize Small Commercial Vessels

- At present, there is a great interest in Sri Lanka, over the activities carried out by the small commercial vessels. At the same time, with the development of the tourism industry, there is a significant increase in the passenger transportation by ships and as well as in the tourism activities. As such, the proposal made by Hon. Arjuna Ranatunga, the Minister of Ports and Shipping, to make regulations for the regularization of small merchant vessels under the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 52 of 1971, with a view to formalizing the registration and regularization of these small merchant vessels, was approved by the Cabinet.
